Why Phone Link can’t show your history
This is not a bug, and it is not an oversight. It follows from how Windows is allowed to talk to an iPhone at all.
Phone Link reaches your iPhone over Bluetooth, using a standard profile called MAP — the same mechanism your car uses to read a text aloud. MAP is designed to hand over messages as they arrive. Two consequences follow directly:
- There is no history in the channel. MAP relays new traffic; it was never built to serve a back catalogue. So Phone Link can only show you what has come in since you connected — and when Bluetooth disconnects, that goes with it.

iMessage isn’t on that channel at all. Your blue-bubble
conversations live in a database on the iPhone itself — a file called
chat.db— which Bluetooth has no access to. That is why the history you are looking for cannot appear over this connection no matter how long you wait.
So Phone Link isn’t failing at showing your history. It is doing exactly what its connection permits, and history is on the other side of a wall it cannot reach through. Nothing in a Windows update will change that; it would take a change from Apple.
What ScribeHold does instead
ScribeHold doesn’t use Bluetooth. It goes to the place the messages actually live: the message database on the phone, handed over by the same Apple protocol iTunes and Apple Devices use.
- ScribeHold reads the phone itself, on Windows. No Mac, no iTunes, and nothing you had to create somewhere else first. Plug in over USB, tap your passcode (Apple requires this on iOS 16.1+), and ScribeHold does the rest.
- ScribeHold indexes everything it finds. iMessage, SMS, MMS, and RCS, with attachments and group-chat sender names, going back as far as the phone still holds.
- ScribeHold keeps itself current. A Windows Service picks up where it left off each time you connect, in the background.
- You can find any of it in seconds. Full-text search across the whole archive — by name, by phrase, by date.
Everything is read and stored on your own PC. No cloud sync, no account required to browse, nothing uploaded.
What ScribeHold does not do
Worth being plain about, because it is the thing people most often assume.
- ScribeHold cannot send or receive messages. ScribeHold is not a Phone Link replacement and not a messaging client. It reads your messages off the device; it never talks to the Messages service.
- ScribeHold is not a backup tool. It copies your messages, attachments, and contacts — not your photos, notes, or apps. You cannot restore an iPhone from it. Keep using iCloud or Finder for that.
- No live notifications. Nothing pops up when a text arrives. If you want that on your PC, keep Phone Link — it does that job well and it is free.
- ScribeHold cannot recover deleted messages. If a message was deleted from the iPhone before ScribeHold last read it, the phone no longer has it, so ScribeHold cannot either.
- ScribeHold is Windows-only, and there’s no WhatsApp. iMessage, SMS, MMS, and RCS only.

They’re complements, not substitutes
The honest summary: keep both. They solve different halves of the same problem, and neither one covers the other.
Phone Link is free, it is already installed, and it does live messaging and calls on your desktop — which ScribeHold does not do and does not intend to. ScribeHold does the years of history behind it: every conversation, every attachment, searchable, on the same PC.
