Is there a free way to export iPhone messages on Windows?

Yes, with limits. Some free options run only from a command line. Others are free tiers that hold something back: older messages, a PDF without a watermark, or more than a few exports.

The free one with no limits: imessage-exporter

imessage-exporter is free, open source, and runs on Windows *. It reads a backup that Apple Devices or iTunes has already saved on the PC, and writes each conversation out as plain text or as a web page you open in a browser. It takes the whole history. No date window, no watermark, no export count.

The cost is your time. There is no window and no buttons; you type commands. Its instructions recommend installing it with Cargo, the Rust language's package tool, and mention ready-made downloads only for Macs. A Windows file is on the releases page too, just not named in the instructions *. Then you make that backup, point the tool at its folder with one flag, and pick a format with another.

People get stuck here. One Reddit user spent about an hour working out how to download a release instead of the source code, then found the instructions were mostly a list of flags *. If typing commands does not bother you, it is a good tool and it costs nothing.

It does not write a PDF. You open the web-page export in a browser and print that to PDF; the tool has a flag that exists to make the printout work *.

The free tiers of the paid tools

TextExhibit's free trial puts a watermark on every PDF, blanks out some messages, and stops after three exports. Paying removes all three, and a one-time license for a personal iPhone costs less than half of our first year *.

iMazing has a free mode with no time limit, for personal use *. Its licensing page does not say which features that mode covers, and it publishes no price we can read, so we will not quote one. Install it and see what it lets you export.

What ScribeHold gives away, and what it charges

ScribeHold Free searches your whole history, opens the last 90 days, and exports the last 30. No watermark, no export count. The windows roll forward with the calendar: a text from 20 days ago can be exported today, and not two weeks from now.

Past those windows is ScribeHold Complete at $4.99 a month or $49 a year. That is more than TextExhibit's one-time price in the first year alone, and the gap grows each year you renew.

What the money buys, set against the command line, is the steps you skip. ScribeHold copies the history off the iPhone itself over a USB cable. There is no separate backup to make first, nothing to compile, and no flags. You do type the passcode on the phone each time; Apple asks for it on iOS 16.1 and later.

When you should not pay anybody

  • You are fine typing commands. imessage-exporter does the whole history for nothing, and it opens an encrypted backup if you give it the password *. ScribeHold cannot. If your iPhone has a backup password set, the run fails.
  • You have a Mac. Messages there prints to PDF, and imessage-exporter has a ready-made Mac download. ScribeHold is Windows-only.
  • The messages are in WhatsApp. ScribeHold reads the Messages app: iMessage, SMS, MMS and RCS. Not WhatsApp.
  • You want a few messages. Screenshots are free and fine for that.
  • You want deleted messages back. Once the iPhone has dropped a message, no tool reading that phone will find it.

Trying it before paying

Download ScribeHold for Windows and search on the free tier. If the last 30 days is all you need to export, you never pay us.
