Connecting your iPhone

ScribeHold reads your messages off the device itself. To do that, your iPhone or iPad has to be connected to this PC. A USB cable is the primary and required way to connect.

Start with USB — it's required

The first time you connect a device, and every time you want the most reliable read, plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC with a USB (or USB-C / Lightning) cable. USB is the only connection method guaranteed to work for the initial pairing and first read.

  1. Let ScribeHold check for the Apple Devices app. To talk to your iPhone, Windows needs Apple's Apple Devices app (or the older iTunes) installed. You don't have to hunt for it yourself: ScribeHold checks automatically on first run and, if it's missing, prompts you to install it from the Microsoft Store — usually there's nothing to do manually.
  2. Plug in the cable. Connect the iPhone or iPad directly to a USB port on your PC. Prefer a port on the computer itself over a hub, and use a cable you know is good for data (not a charge-only cable).
  3. Unlock and tap "Trust". Unlock the device and, when it asks whether to Trust This Computer, tap Trust and enter your passcode. This pairing is what lets ScribeHold read your messages.
  4. Enter your passcode when prompted. Starting with iOS 16.1, Apple requires your device passcode on the device for every backup. That prompt comes from iOS, not from ScribeHold, and can't be skipped.

Once the device is trusted and the first read completes, ScribeHold does the rest — copying and indexing your messages so you can search and browse them.

Wi-Fi sync — some devices, and only after USB

Wi-Fi sync is opt-in and secondary. It is not a way to connect a brand-new device: it becomes available for some devices only after you have completed an initial USB pairing and backup as described above. Whether it works depends on your device, your Windows setup, and your network.

To enable Wi-Fi sync after your first USB backup:

  1. Connect the device over USB and complete at least one successful backup.
  2. In Apple Devices (or iTunes), with the device still plugged in, turn on the option to sync with this device over Wi-Fi.
  3. Keep the PC and the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network. The device generally needs to be unlocked, and often charging, before it becomes reachable.

Even with Wi-Fi enabled, Apple still requires your passcode on the device for each backup, and Wi-Fi backups are slower and less reliable than USB. If a device doesn't show up over Wi-Fi, reconnect the USB cable — that always works.

Not seeing your device?

  • Confirm the Apple Devices app (or iTunes) is installed — ScribeHold prompts you to install it from the Microsoft Store on first run if it's missing.
  • Try a different USB port or a known-good data cable, and avoid USB hubs.
  • Unlock the device and make sure you tapped Trust.
  • Unplug and reconnect the cable; if you enabled Wi-Fi sync, fall back to USB.
